#BossHack No. 1: Your Business Starts with YOU

October 7th, 2014 | Sara Davidson

Starting a business is hard. And running a successful business that continues to grow (while living a life you love) can be even more difficult. But it doesn’t have to be…

I’ve helped entrepreneurs from all over the world build companies for years now. From online businesses, to startups, to major corporations — there are so many critical things that you need to consider while you’re creating your dream. But once you have them, you will be light years ahead of virtually anyone else you come across. You stop doubting, guessing, and wondering, and take action toward your dreams. And with that, anything is possible.

Welcome to our #BossHack series. This is Part 1 out of 2 articles where I’m going to be sharing the best #BossHacks (or fundamentals) that every game-changing entrepreneur needs to know to build a wildly profitable business that makes them feel alive.

P.S: These are all things that we cover in Boss School, so if you haven’t already, check that out over here! Enrollment closes on October 10th (with limited spots available) so don’t miss out. 🙂

xoxo, Sara

Everyone always talks about how you need the right education, mentors and support to create a successful business. While that is very true (and much of what we offer in Boss School), there are some incredibly important aspects that hands-down can make or break your fulfillment as an entrepreneur.

The success of your business, and especially your role as the business owner, is almost entirely dependent on you deeply, truly knowing yourself. This may seems so obvious, but we tend to get in “go” mode and forget that the business itself is an extension of you. These often overlooked components are crucial to your ability to be deeply fulfilled and wildly successful. Let me explain…

Having self-awareness, in terms of your innate strengths and weakness, likes/dislikes, and a fundamental understanding of who you are as a person is one of the non-negotiable components to your success and happiness as an entrepreneur — and potentially in life. By doing the inner work and discovery on yourself, you become clear on your specific leadership role and position within the company, and hire partners and employees that complement you. For example, are you the ideas/creative person and you need someone to manage the execution? Or is it the opposite? Most entrepreneurs are not necessarily the best managers, and are best suited for holding the strategic vision of the company, and struggle when are are responsible for all of the moving parts. By spending the majority of your time in your Zone of Genius, you do work you excel at and makes you feel alive, and can let others do what they love and are best at.

What is your personal motivation to build your business? Why are you so passionate about giving this gift to the world or the problem you’re solving? Your big WHY is the motivating reason, or the “driver,” for why you get up every day to do what you do. It’s your reminder for why you decide to take risks for a bigger purpose or mission that you have. Do you want to provide a better life for your family? Do you want to change people’s lives by offering your unique product or service? Most people understand their “what” (their business idea, product or service) or their “how” (their unique competitive advantage, marketing/distribution, etc.), but forget the big WHY. Once you get to the root of it, you become unstoppable because you remember your unbelievable motivation for creating your business.

Getting clear on the lifestyle you desire (in all areas of your life) allows you to create a business model that completely aligns with that — so you can make the amount of money, freedom, travel (or whatever it is) you crave in your life so that you can build a highly impactful, profitable business while being entirely fulfilled. Do you want to spend a lot of time with your family and friends? Do you want flexibility in your schedule to travel and do the things you love? What does your ideal work day look like? It all impacts what type of business model you create. You want to hear something interesting? 9 times out of 10, it’s just the alignment piece that holds entrepreneurs back from making big leaps in their business. Good thing it’s totally addressable. 🙂

Having the right mindset is the most essential piece to the puzzle. We all have fears or limiting beliefs — doubting whether we have what it takes or if what we want is even possible. But I’m here to tell you that they are all bullshit. As in, they aren’t real. It’s just this little voice inside our heads that hinders us from pursuing our dreams because it might be risky or uncomfortable. In fact, fear is an incredible implication oftentimes of what is best for us or what our heart truly desires. Once you learn how to identify fears, they can become fuel to move you forward, farther, faster. And after you are armed with this mindset and these tools, anything in your life is possible. And it’s this relentless belief in ourselves and our vision as an entrepreneur that empower us to move through obstacles and challenges (which we will undoubtedly face), and persevere to move forward.

I’ve used every one of these tactics while Hello Fearless, but also with every entrepreneur I’ve worked with. And it’s unbelievable how they can transform your ability to make big, amazing things happen in your life and business. And it has given me the resolve and drive I need to keep going even when things get difficult. Because here’s the thing, I’ve seen this in my own life. I am so grounded in who I am and what I’m doing, that even the end of my relationship, death in my family, or case of the Mondays can stop me from making it happen.
